PART 1
—As soon as the cake arrives, cut a slice and eat it in front of the camera. You must be the first, my love.
Adrián Villaseñor's voice was sweet, but it left a strange feeling in Camila Serrano's chest.
They were celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary that day. Adrián was supposed to take her out to dinner at a restaurant in Polanco, but he had rushed off to Monterrey to close a deal for the family business.
Camila said nothing.
After all, Constructora Serrano existed because of her father's hard work and her own effort. Adrián had only stepped in as the administrative manager after their wedding.
Yet, that morning, he had reminded her about the cake four times.
—Don’t save it for tonight. I want to see your face when you taste the first piece.
Camila tried to take it as a romantic gesture, even though Adrián had never shown this much interest in a dessert before.
At 12:10, a white box with a red ribbon arrived. It was from an exclusive bakery in the Roma neighborhood and included a handwritten card:
"For our 10 years. Always together."
Camila took a photo of the box, the receipt, and the delivery person's number. It was a habit she had formed after years of reviewing contracts and deliveries.
When she placed the cake on the kitchen counter, Adrián started a video call.
—Open it already.
Camila took the knife.
At that moment, the private elevator opened.
Doña Elvira, Adrián's mother, entered without knocking. Behind her was Lorena, her youngest daughter, filming with her cell phone.
—Just look at this —Lorena mocked—. The great businesswoman celebrating alone because her husband prefers to work.
Camila lowered the knife.
—You don't have permission to enter or to film me.
Doña Elvira placed her purse on the table as if she were in her own home.
—My son pays the bills here. I don’t need permission from a daughter-in-law who thinks she owns the world.
—This apartment was mine before I got married.
—But now you belong to a family —Elvira replied—. And in this family, I’m still in charge.
Camila explained that Adrián had asked her to try the first piece. The mother-in-law let out a dry laugh.
—First, eat the mother who brought you into this world. Wives come and go.
Elvira ordered the cake to be put away, and Camila, to avoid another fight, returned to the office.
She came back around 11:00 PM.
She found her mother-in-law and Lorena laughing in front of the television. The cake was destroyed. Only a crushed slice remained on a plate.
—We left you the leftovers —said Lorena—. Don’t make a scene, dude. It’s still expensive cake.
Camila stared at the piece, feeling that something wasn’t right.
—I’m not going to eat it.
Doña Elvira smiled smugly.
—Then stop acting like a victim. No one took anything from you.
Camila locked herself in her room.
At 11:48, a scream echoed through the apartment.
When she came out, she found Lorena vomiting on the floor and Doña Elvira writhing with purple lips.
Then Camila's phone rang.
It was Adrián.
And before she could explain anything, he asked, terrified:
—Did you eat the cake yet?
PART 2
Camila froze for a few seconds.
Adrián hadn’t asked what had happened, who was screaming, or why she was struggling to breathe.
He only wanted to know if she had eaten.
—No —she replied—. Your mother and Lorena finished it.
There was an uncomfortably long silence on the other end.
—They ate everything?
Camila glanced at Doña Elvira, who could barely breathe next to the armchair.
—Almost everything.
—But I clearly told you that you had to try it first —Adrián murmured.
That phrase finally awakened all her suspicions.
Camila hung up and called 911. While waiting for the paramedics, she opened the windows, moved Lorena away from the vomit, and placed a pillow under her mother-in-law's head.
Then she started taking photos.
She photographed the box, the plates, the utensils, the receipt, the crumbs, and even the napkins thrown in the trash.
—Why are you taking photos? —Lorena moaned.
—Because this may not have been an accident.
The ambulance took the two women to the hospital. Lupita, the housekeeper, accompanied Lorena while Camila took the delivery receipt with her.
In the emergency room, a doctor confirmed that both showed symptoms of severe poisoning.
—It doesn’t appear to be caused by spoiled food —he explained—. We found indications of a sedative combined with another compound. We will notify the authorities.
Camila felt the ground shift beneath her.
Adrián had insisted she eat first. Her husband knew exactly who needed to taste that cake.
At 4:30 AM, while waiting for news, she received an email from Mariana Fuentes, the legal director of the construction company.
“Subject: Strange document located on the server.”
The file was titled:
“Continuity Protocol for General Management Incapacity.”
Camila opened it.
The document stated that if she suffered a serious illness or became unable to make decisions, Adrián would temporarily assume control of Constructora Serrano.
It also included communications for clients, banks, and employees.
Everything was prepared.
On the last page was a proposal to sell 30% of the shares to an investment fund related to the Villaseñor family.
Camila checked the digital properties.
The file had been created the night before at 10:16.
Before the cake was delivered.
Before the poisoning.
Before there supposedly was an emergency.
She immediately called Mariana.
—Block any power from Adrián. Freeze any transactions over $100,000 and back up all emails from the administrative area.
—Are you sure?
—Completely. And don’t tell anyone on his team.
At 7:40, Adrián arrived at the hospital, his shirt wrinkled and his face carefully troubled.
He rushed toward his mother's room, spoke with the doctors, and then hugged Camila in front of several people.
—Thank God you’re okay.
She didn’t return the hug.
—Why didn’t you ask about your mother first when you called?
Adrián slowly pulled away.
—I was confused.
—You asked if I had eaten the cake before knowing what was happening.
—It was our cake. Obviously, I was worried about you.
—You also repeated four times that I had to be first.
Adrián lowered his voice.
—Don’t start with your paranoia. My mother is fighting for her life.
Camila held his gaze.
—Exactly why I won’t stay silent.
Shortly after, two agents from the authorities arrived. The bakery had confirmed that the order was not placed directly by Adrián but by Mauricio Ledesma, his personal assistant.
Mauricio had requested that a “special essence” be incorporated into a specific section of the cake.
—A specific section? —Camila asked.
The agent showed a diagram sent via email.
The substance was to be placed in the center, right where the first slice was usually cut.
Doña Elvira and Lorena had started eating from that area.
Adrián crossed his arms.
—I know nothing about that. Mauricio handled the details.
—Did he also handle the document that named him general director? —Camila asked.
Adrián's face lost color.
—What document?
She showed him the screen of her phone.
—It was created before the cake left the bakery.
—That must be a preventive proposal.
—Preventive of what, Adrián? I was perfectly healthy yesterday.
The agent intervened.
—We’ll need to review your messages and bank movements.
Adrián feigned indignation.
—I’m the husband of the victim.
Camila felt a deep rage.
—I’m not your victim because your mother decided to humiliate me and stole my first slice.
—Don’t say stupid things!
The shout echoed through the hallway.
Several people turned.
For the first time, Adrián stopped looking like the kind man who always spoke slowly. His eyes were filled with fury.
—You always have to control everything —he continued—. The company, the house, the money… You never let me be anyone.
—I made you manager. I gave you access to my contacts and allowed your family into my life.
—But the owner was still you!
Camila watched him in silence.
There was the truth.
It wasn’t wounded love. It was resentment.
For years, Adrián had smiled while waiting for the moment to take what she had built.
—So that’s what this was about —Camila said—. You didn’t want a wife. You wanted a company.
Adrián put on his mask again.
—You’re upset. We’ll talk when you can think clearly.
He tried to grab her arm, but Camila pulled away.
—Don’t ever touch me again.
The agents asked Adrián to remain available for questioning. He agreed with a tense smile, convinced he could still control the situation.
But that same afternoon, the first twist appeared.
Mauricio Ledesma was found in a hotel near the airport. He was planning to travel to Guatemala with $480,000 in cash.
At first, he denied everything.
Then, upon learning he could face charges of attempted homicide, he handed over his conversations with Adrián.
The messages were clear.
“I need Camila out for at least two weeks.”
“With her hospitalized, the board will approve the replacement.”
“She can’t die. She just has to seem like it’s a natural crisis.”
“Let her eat the first slice. I’ll make sure to insist.”
There were also audios where Adrián spoke about transferring shares, selling properties, and divorcing when Camila was weakened.
However, the most painful discovery wasn’t that plan.
Mauricio confessed that Doña Elvira knew part of the strategy.
According to him, Adrián had told his mother that the cake would cause severe indigestion for Camila. Elvira was to convince her to rest and sign documents “to prevent issues in the company.”
The mother-in-law didn’t know the dose could be lethal, but she had accepted to participate in a maneuver to take away control from her.
When Doña Elvira woke up three days later, she found Camila sitting by the window of her room.
—Where is my son? —she asked with difficulty.
—Testifying before the authorities.
Elvira closed her eyes.
—You must help him. Adrián made a mistake out of desperation.
—Did you know he wanted to incapacitate me?
The woman remained silent.
That silence was enough.
—He said you would only get sick —she finally admitted—. We thought that if you rested for a few days, Adrián could prove he was capable of leading, too.
Camila felt nauseous.
—You thought?
—You never treated him like a true owner.
—Because he wasn’t.
Elvira tightened the sheets.
—He was your husband.
—And that didn’t give him the right to steal from me.
—Everything would have stayed in the family.
Camila let out a bitter laugh.
—You ate the cake to show you were in charge of my house. You ended up in intensive care for protecting your son’s ambition.
Doña Elvira turned her face to the wall.
—I didn’t know it could kill you.
—But you did know you wanted to make me sick, take my position, and get me to sign documents. That’s treachery too.
In the next room, Lorena had overheard part of the conversation.
When Camila came out, the young woman called her.
—I didn’t know anything, I swear —she said crying—. Mom only told me to take the cake away from you to bring you down a peg.
—And you almost died for turning my house into a battlefield.
—I don’t want to go to jail.
—Then tell the truth.
Lorena confessed that Elvira received constant updates from Adrián about Camila’s accounts. She also revealed that mother and son had searched for deeds, passwords, and documents within the apartment for months.
Lupita confirmed she had seen them opening drawers when Camila was working.
With those statements, Mauricio’s messages, and the bank movements, Adrián was arrested as the likely organizer of the poisoning.
In front of the agents, he still tried to blame others.
—Mauricio exaggerated my instructions. My mother misunderstood. Camila is using this to destroy me.
She looked at him without tears.
—I didn’t have to destroy you. I just stopped protecting the lie you were.
Before they took him away, Adrián stepped as close as the agents allowed.
—After 10 years, are you going to let them lock me up?
—After 10 years, I discovered I was sleeping next to a man who calculated even my first bite.
The board of Constructora Serrano revoked all his powers. The sale of shares was blocked, and accounts related to his family were put under investigation.
Camila filed for divorce that same week.
She also changed the locks, the elevator codes, and the digital accesses to the apartment.
When Doña Elvira received her discharge, she wanted to return to pick up some belongings.
Camila ordered that they be sent via messenger.
—That’s also my son’s house —she protested over the phone.
—No. It never was. I confused tolerance with love, and you confused my patience with permission.
Elvira fell silent.
—Forgive me —she murmured afterward—. My pride almost cost me my life.
—Your pride saved the life of the person you wanted to humiliate.
Camila hung up.
For months, she faced lawyers, rumors, and partners who recommended she hide what had happened to protect the company’s reputation.
She refused.
Before the board, she declared that no marriage, no matter how perfect it seemed, should grant unlimited access to a person's wealth, dignity, or security.
Adrián remained under investigation. Mauricio agreed to cooperate with the authorities. Lorena distanced herself from her mother and provided more evidence.
Doña Elvira lost what she valued most: control over her family.
Camila didn’t come out unscathed, either.
Some nights, she looked at the wedding photos and cried for the man she thought she knew. She didn’t miss the real Adrián, but the character he had played for ten years.
On her next anniversary, there was no dinner, no flowers, no cake.
Camila stayed alone in the kitchen, facing the same counter where she had opened that box. She prepared coffee, took a deep breath, and threw her wedding ring into a drawer.
She understood that danger doesn’t always break in through a door.
Sometimes it already has a key.
Sometimes it calls you "my love," kisses your forehead, and asks if you’ve eaten yet.
And when someone told her she had been cruel in turning in her husband and denying her mother-in-law forgiveness, Camila replied without looking away:
—Cruel was plotting my downfall and calling it family. I just stopped offering them my life to keep a peace that never existed.
